Performance

Katahdins are a performance breed. The Baalands is a performance-oriented flock.  Selection is based on (maternal) performance traits not show-ring qualities or other visual traits that have no relationship to productivity.  Poor-performing and unsound animals are removed from the flock.

The following table gives the current performance goals for mature ewes (>1 year) in the Baalands.

There are numerous advantages to breeding ewe lambs. At the Baalands, ewe lambs are bred to lamb at ~12 months of age. To ensure success, they are fed and managed separately from mature ewes until they are joined for the second time.

The following table gives the current performance goals for yearling ewes:

Six year old ewe with quads.

Yearling ewe with twin lambs.
